Biokinetics (honnours)
Biokinetics focuses on providing clients with scientifically based exercise program prescriptions, aiming at improving health and living quality, as well as programmes for rehabilitation of clinical conditions in patients where physical exercise is indicated as treatment modality.
What are the admission requirements for the Biokinetics program?
- General regulations as prescribed by the University.
- The candidate must have completed a B-degree with Human Movement Science as major.
- Academic selection according to criteria as set out by the School.
- Selection directed at psychometric, personal and skills development as applicable in the Biokintics program.
- Approval by the relevant School Director.
How is the selection for the Biokinetics program conducted?
| Paper selection |
Paper selection is conducted first. The application form is available from the Secretary: School for Biokinetics, Recreation en Sport Science at tel: (018) 299 1800 of or choose: |
Psychometric testing |
- Third year students with Human Movement Science as major, have to report for the post-graduate psychometrical tests if they would like to pursue the honours degree.
- These tests are usually conducted during September and October for enrolled students at the Potchefstroom Campus of Northwest University.
- Students from other universities usually sit for the tests on the day prior to the day of the interview or on the same day the selection interview is scheduled for.
|
| Selection Interview |
A short list of candidates is compiled on the grounds of the paper selection and psychometric testing, who are invited for a selection interview. These interviews are usually conducted during October. On the grounds of the results of the selection interview a student will receive admission to the honours degree in Human Movement Science. |
| The student must still enroll at the University’s Admittance Office before the prescribed time. |
What outcomes does the Biokinetics program offer?
- Determining of the general history taking of a client aiming at the determination and classification of the exercise risk of the individual.
- Physical working ability is determined through a physical working ability test, and is then monitored to establish an effective and safe exercise level for a prescribed program.
- Evaluation of a client through multilevel labour tasks, at which time heart frequency is monitored – determining blood pressure and other physiological responses prior to, during and after task – determining of movement range and muscle power – analysis of posture and bodily composition.
- Prescribing, following on and attending of certain exercise programs.
- Evaluation and exercise program recommendations for special groups and occupations.
- Evaluation of the functional limits of an affected limb or part of the body – analysis of posture – carrying out specialized muscle power / muscle exhaustion / joint circumference tests and rehabilitation program recommendations.

Contents of the subjects in the Biokinetics program?

| Biokinetics |
Concerns the evaluation, rehabilitation and maintenance of health through exercise, as well as prescribing general/specific exercise programs for enhancing health in a gymnasium. Especially the prevention of hypokinesis (disease due to lack of exercise) and the rehabilitation of sport injuries and emphasized. |
| Biokinetics Practical |
Practical exposure and implementation is done in the Institute for Biokinetics. During this phase students come into contact with the practice and application of the theory. |
| Kinanthropometry |
This literally concerns the measuring of the human body, the techniques and calculations. This includes training and examination for registration as an Internationally accredited Level II Kinanthropometrist. It also involves the methods and techniques that need adapting for application on children and handicapped persons, as well as the writing of a kinanthropometric report. |
| Exercise Physiology |
Scientific aspects that influence the physiological processes of the body during acute and chronic participation in exercise/physical activity. It is especially focused on the application thereof in the Biokinetic Practice. Exercise Physiology is also concerned with the evaluation of physical ability in the working environment – known as Physical Ability Assessment (PAA) – as described in the manual of Biokinetics. |
| Ergological Evaluation |
It involves the evaluation of joints and muscles concerning ergological function with prescribing exercises for physical rehabilitation as goal. |
| Practice Management |
Concerned with the managing process and entrepreneurship, as well as issues concerning the establishment of an own business – forms of enterprise – legal considerations and contracts – creativity, feasibility – human resource planning and leadership – Financial administration and an administrative plan – Risk and Ensurance – Marketing Plan, Operation Plan and Business Plan – working with other registered practitioners – Ethical codes between registered persons. |
