SUBJECT GROUP CONSUMER SCIENCES

Rules for the  degree Baccalaureus Scientiae Consumer Science

This qualification can only be taken fulltime at the Potchefstroom campus.

Duration of the study

The duration of the study for this qualification is a minimum of three years and a maximum of four years.

Program Consumer sciences

The curriculum which is compiled for this program gives a basic education in Consumer sciences. In the compilation of the curriculums attention was given to career opportunities and man-power needs of our country. These curricula also prepare the student for post graduate study, which is subject to selection requirements as described in the post graduate yearbook.

Admission requirements

In addition to the general admission requirements (General rule A.4) and further applicable stipulations in Introductory rule G.1.11, he following specific admission requirements are applicable.

For admission to the program the following are required:

a) 'n Natural science subject on level 4 (50-59%). (At least one of the following subjects: Maths, Physical Sciences, Agricultural or Life Sciences.) Consumer studies is not required, and

b) APS-score of at least 22.

Rules for the degree Honors  Baccalaureus Consumer Sciences

The honors degree follows a three- or four-year degree in Consumer Sciences or after the status of a Baccalaureus degree or a Baccalaureus Scientiae in Consumer Sciences degree was achieved.

The study can be taken full time or part time.

 

Duration of the study

The minimum duration of the study is one year full time and the maximum duration is two years full time. For part time study the minimum duration is two years and the maximum duration is three years.

General Admission Requirements

  • Admission to the honors study occur according to General rule A.12.1
  • First registration for post graduate programmes should not be later than 30 November, since classes already starts mid January.
  • Re-registration for the following study years should be before 31 January of each year.

Program : Consumer Sciences

 

The aim is to:

  1. provide students who already have a first degree in Consumer Sciences, specialised career orientated education to enable them to fulfill the role of consumer scientist in the retail and manufacturing industry and to do consumer research and to solve consumer orientated problems within this environment and

  2. use their scientific knowledge and skills to improve the general life quality of the South African consumer by acting in a advisory capacity by developing and implementing of consumer orientated educational programmes.

Specific Admission requirements

  • A B.Sc. or B. Consumer Sciences degree or similar qualification is required.
  • Admission to this degree occur in accordance with the director of the school or his delegate, with consideration of previous academic achievements of the student. An average academic mark of 65% for the B.Sc. or B. Consumer Sciences degree or similar degree is required.
  • Furthermore: Students will only be accepted if efficient research projects, man power and funding is available.
