Graduates

B.Sc Consumer Sciences programmes

The 3-year B.Sc. Consumer Sciences program includes modules such as consumer behaviour, consumer purchasing practices and resource management, introduction to the fashion industry, textiles, consumer orientated foods and new product development processes.  The combination of these modules plus all the other modules enables the student to work in the retail, manufacturing or tourism industries.

The Consumer Sciences program also provides the prospective student with the opportunity to combine Tourism or Business management with Consumer Sciences.

 

Admission requirements:

The General admission requirements are described according to General Rule A.5.1.2.1 and further applicable regulations in introductory rule G.1.11.

 

For admission to the program the following are required:

  • National Senior Certificate with University admission;
  • A Natural science subject on level 4 (50-59%); At least one of the following subjects:
    • Maths,
    • Physical Sciences,
    • Agricultural Sciences or
    • Life Sciences
  • APS-score: The results achieved in four designated subjects plus two NSC subjects will be taken into consideration. The results achieved in Life orientation will not be taken into account;
  • An APS score of at least 22.
  • Language requirement: A pass mark of 50-59% (level 4) in the language of teaching and learning concerning home language or first additional language level.

Prospective students will be subject to a selection process consisting of the following components:

  • Academic achievement;
  • An interview with members of a selection panel; and
  • Completion of a selection test.

 

Particulars of the selection requirements and procedures can be obtained from the School Director of Physiology, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences.

 

Application must be submitted before 31 May.

Post graduate study

Post graduate study in Consumer Sciences

The post graduate programmes are exclusively focused to allow the student to specialise within the core components of Consumer Sciences, namely Foods, Clothing and Housing/Interior design.

The Honors degree follows upon a three- or four-year degree in Consumer Sciences or after the status of a Bachelor degree or Bachelor of Science has been granted.

 

The study can be completed part time or full time. The part time option will only be granted in special circumstances.

 

Admission requirements

B.Sc. or  B. Consumer Sciences degree. If not in possession of the qualifications mentioned, a complete academic record should be handed in to ensure that the required main subjects (core modules) were completed.

 

Admission to this degree takes place in consultation with the school director or his delegate taking into consideration the previous academic achievements of the student. An average academic mark of 60% in the B.Sc. or B. Consumer Sciences degree or equivalent  qualification as stipulated in G.25.3.1(a) is required. The average mark is calculated according to the core modules of the undergraduate study years and students are placed on a preference list accordingly.

 

Admission is subject to availability of capacity in the subject group.
