Short CV - Frances Siebert

Frances Siebert was born in Newcastle, KwaZUlu-Natal and grew up on a farm in the Wakkerstroom-Utrecht district. She matriculated at Newcastle High School after which she enrolled for a B.Sc Zoology degree in 1994 at the University of Pretoria. She continued her tertiary education in Botany and obtained a M.Sc degree cum laude in Plant Ecology. During the completion of het Masters degree, she was appointed at the University of Pretoria as a Technical- and Research Assistant in the Botany Department. During that period she was also manager of the national vegetation database of the northern regions, which contributed to the classification of vegetation types for the Vegetation Map of South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland (Mucina and Rutherford 2006). Mrs Siebert left the University of Pretoria in 2003 when she and her husband, Dr Stefan Siebert moved to Richards Bay, Zululand, KZN. Mrs Siebert took on part-time research work, environmental consultancy and secondary teaching in Zululand while raising their first child. In 2005 Frances Siebert was appointed by the University of Zululand as a lecturer in the Foundation Programme where she lectured Zoology and Botany. In 2007 the Siebert family left the University of Zululand to take on positions at the North-West University. Mrs Siebert is currently appointed as a subject specialist but is also the academic administration manager of the School for Environmental Sciences and Development. Frances loves spending time with her family, especially when they relax outdoors. She loves music and plays the piano.




RESEARCH INTERESTS - Frances Siebert

Frances Siebert is appointed as a subject specialist and her main field of research is community ecology, phytosociology and vegetation mapping. In her Masters dissertation, a synthesis of Mopaneveld vegetation in southern Africa was presented. She was actively involved in the mapping and description of vegetation types within the Mopane Bioregion of the Vegetation map of South Africa, Letsotho and Swaziland (Mucina and Rutherford 2006). Frances is currently undertaking several research projects in the Kruger National Park and developed an interest in riparian vegetation ecology and dynamics
