The focus area aims to:

• provide key information to support the development of sustainable air quality policies and practices in Southern Africa.
  
• investigate chemical, physical and biological aspects of inland aquatic environments (riparian flora, fauna, and micro-organisms).
  
•  investigate various aspects of sustainable development and environmental management in the public and private sector.

This fundamental and applied multidisciplinary research is aimed at developing an understanding of the influences of physical, chemical, biological and anthropogenic factors on the functioning, sustainability and sustainable utilisation of ecosystems.
