Waanders shares expertise on coal research

The School of Chemical- and Minerals Engineering has proved that they are an international recognisable centre for Coal Research.
After the recent Fossil Fuel Foundation’s (FFF) recent Indaba regarding Clean Coal Technologies, Prof. Frans Waanders was approached by the Afrikaans radio station, RSG to share his expertise in their journal program, Spektrum.
Waanders’s excellent ability to convey this complicated field of research in appealing, basic terms drew attention, and two further sessions were broadcasted.
He said alternative energy resources are currently widely investigated and speculated, but coal has proven to be the most reliable source for energy generation. The source will however not last forever, and it’s environmental impact is under the magnifying glass.

The focus of the program was thus to inform the listeners on the topic of clean coal technology and the coal beneficiation process with modern technologies in order to lessen it’s negative environmental impact.
The Coal Research Centre at the North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus, that is managed by the School of Chemical and Minerals Engineering is the largest  in South Africa.  This School has been established as an international hub of expertise.
Waanders was also selected as Deputy President for the Pittsburg Coal Conference which was hosted in 2007.  During this conference the School established their worth, and were nominated as hosts for the International Coal Conference for Science and Technology that will be presented in Cape Town in October.
