Former Pukke shine at Ispat Iscor
An official media statement by Christel Eastes
Former Pukke fared extremely well at Ispat Iscor Limited’s annual GIT (Graduate In Training) symposium. The finalists were engineers in training who presented their projects in order to win a 2-week training journey to anywhere in the world. 3 of the 7 finalists were former students of the Puk: Christo Vorster, Zenith Mitchell as well as the overall winner, Gerhard Wernecke. Gerhard obtained his BIng (Mechanic Engineering) in 2002 and currently works for Ispat Iscor – Vanderbijlpark.
His winning project was aimed at limiting financial loss as well as production loss. A big problem is production loss due to electrodes that are damaged by waste materials falling in the waste containers disproportionally. Gerhard’s solution of the problem realised a saving of R3 504 000 per year on electrode consumption as well as the possibility to produce an additional 5 115 ton thanks to the increased production time.
