Prof Pienaar loves fresh air
Prof. Kobus Pienaar, the Director of the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, recently received the 2004 National Association for Clean Air Innovators Award. This reward is for his contribution to the understanding of atmospheric chemistry in South Africa and internationally. Prof Pienaar is taking a leading role in his research field and he is involved in international programmes. He established the first dedicated Atmospheric Chemistry Research Unit in South Africa. His research lead to improved methods to characterize certain atmospheric species. These methods have been introduced into South African air quality management and are currently still used on a broad basis. He has modified imported procedures and measure to suit South African conditions (higher temperatures and humidity).
