The PUK had a great sports year

Press release issued by  Piet de Jager

Recently PUKSPORT paid tribute to several sports stars that excelled during the year and thus brought to a close a great sports year for PUKSPORT.  Athletics almost made a clean sweep as far as the top awards are concerned, with Sunette Viljoen (javelin) and Ockert Celliers (400m hurdles) who received the prize for the PUK’s Sportswoman and Sportsman of the year.  These two were included in the SA Olympic team that went to Athens – the first PUK students to participate in the Olympics.

The junior champion in heptathlon Justine Robbeson was nominated Junior Sportswoman of the Year and the SA u/21 rugby player Pellow van der Westhuizen was nominated Junior Sportsman of the Year.

Four PUK sports disciplines won the South African Student Sports Union (SASSU) tournaments: hockey, karate, gymnastics and athletics.  The PUK Rugby Institute finished die SASSU rugby tournament undefeated and won the SuperSport National Rugby Championship later in the year.

Seven Pukke received senior national colours: the athletes Sunette Viljoen, Ockert Celliers, Gerbrand Grobler and Willie Human, netball players Lizanne Helmand and Alicia J van Rensburg and triathlete Hendrik de Villiers. Twenty-two PUK students represented the country in junior and B teams and 24 Pukke were included in teams of national sports bodies and SASSU.
