Subject Physiology

Education

Undergraduate (B.Sc)

Language: Even though the official language medium at the Potchefstroom Campus is Afrikaans, any assignments, dissertations and theses may be submitted in English. All examination papers are available in both Afrikaans and English.

Financial support: Bursaries, assistantships and demonstrator positions are available for promising students. For information regarding other bursaries and loans, please contact the Financial Support Services of the University.

Baccalaureus Scientiae (B.Sc.)

The B.Sc. degree with Physiology as one of two major subjects can be taken full time (minimum three years) at the North-West University. The Subject Group Physiology is also responsible for Physiology training of UNISA students, which makes it possible for students to enroll for some of the modules via UNISA.

Entry requirements:

No one will be accepted for studying a B.Sc.degree in the Faculty of Health Sciences unless he/she passed the Matriculation Examination with Mathematics Higher Grade, or alternatively, a Natural Science or Health Science subject, such as Physical Science, Biology or Physiology on the Higher Grade, with Mathematics at least on Standard Grade. Grade 12 learners are strongly advised to take (apart from Mathematics) Physical Science, Biology or Physiology at least on Standard Grade level.

Subject Combinations:

Together with Physiology, one of the following subjects can be taken as a major subject:

Animal sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Psychology, Human Movement Studies, Nutrition and in special circumstances, Physics, Mathematics or Statistics.

The main subject combinations determine the subjects of that specific curriculum. The Yearbook of the Faculty of Health Sciences (also see e-Yearbook) contains all information regarding the subjects and contents of each specific subject combination.

Course Content:

The content of the subject Physiology includes the following modules:

  • FLGX111   Introductory Physiology
  • FLGX121   Digestion and Muscle Physiology
  • FLGX211   Endocrinology
  • FLGX212   Metabolism
  • FLGX221   Neurophysiology A
  • FLGX222   Introductory Cardiovascular Physiology
  • FLGX223   Physiological Defense Mechanisms
  • FLGX311   Membrane and Electrophysiology
  • FLGX312   Excretion and Electrolyte balance
  • FLGX313   Respiration
  • FLGX321   Neurophysiology B
  • FLGX322   Applied Cardiovascular Physiology
  • FLGX323   Environmental Physiology
  • FLGX324   Reproductive Physiology

Practical and experimental work will be performed regarding the theory content of all courses with special emphasis on problem solving and computer skills.

Postgraduate (Hons. B.Sc.) (M.Sc. Physiology) (M.Sc. Occupational Hygiene) (Ph.D)

Honours Baccalaureus Scientiae (Hons. B.Sc.)

This is a postgraduate qualification which can be completed through full-time or part-time studies. This general Honours degree will give a student access to both M.Sc. options (i.e. Cardiovascular Physiology or Occupational Hygiene).

Entry requirements:

The student requires a Baccalaureus degree in the Natural Sciences or Medical Sciences with profound knowledge of Physiology or similar qualifications. Students will be judged based on their achievements in previous studies and an average of 60% is set as a requirement.

Further requirements:

STTK111 or similar Statistics module

Duration of the course:

Full-time - 1 year
Part-time - 2 years

Course content:

The following modules are compulsory – Cardiovascular Physiology A, Neurophysiology, Toxicology A, Toxicology B, Cellular Physiology, Endocrinology, Practical project and Research Methodology.

One of the following modules should be selected – Cardiovascular Physiology B or Occupational Hygiene Monitoring A.

Education Opportunities:

  • Formal lectures and class discussions
  • Home study themes and assignments

Students who are not enrolled full-time at the University, will only need to follow half of the curriculum each year.

Project:

The practical project will be performed in a subject that will be determined in coordination with the study leader and with approval of the Director. By doing a practical project, the student will learn applicable skills such as research methods, data collection and analyses, literature studies, presentation of results, scientific writing skills and scientific communication by means of oral or poster presentations.

Magister Scientiae (M.Sc.)

An  M.Sc. can be obtained in Physiology or Occupational Hygiene. If it is not possible for a student to enroll fulltime for the degree, the possibility of part-time study can be discussed with the School Director.

Entry Requirements:

Candidates require a suitable Hons.B.Sc. degree, a Honours degree in Medical Sciences or a similar qualification.

Curriculum:

M.Sc. in Physiology

A dissertation based on a research investigation regarding a suitable subject in the current research field of cardiovascular physiology.

M.Sc. in Occupational Hygiene

Theoretical examinations are required in Occupational Hygiene Monitoring B, Virbration, Heat and Ergonomic factors, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Personal Protective Equipment and Radiation. A dissertation based on a research investigation regarding a suitable subject in the subject field and the successful attendance and examination of a NOSA course is compulsory.

Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.)

This study may be conducted on a full-time or part-time basis. The degree can be obtained in Physiology or Occupational Hygiene.

Entry requirements:

Candidates require a Masters Degree or similar qualification.

Curriculum:

A thesis based on a research investigation in a subject from the current subject field.
