Historical Background
B.Sc. (Dietetics)
The B.Sc (with Dietetics) degree was a three year course with Physiology and Nutrition as major subjects presented by the Potchefstroom University until 1995. After completing the degree, a postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics presented by the University of Pretoria was a requirement for registration with the SA Medical and Dental Council to practice as a Dietician. In 1994, the University of Pretoria decided to phase out their Dietetics course and postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics and to establish a four year integrated degree course. Potchefstroom University was instructed by the Department of Education to change its Dietetics degree to be in line with the new developments. During 1995 the new integrated degree course was planned while the three year degree course was phased out and some of the students who were still registered for the old three year course changed over to the integrated course. The first fourth year students completed the new course in 1997 and could register directly with the Health Professions Council for South Africa (HPCSA). Students who have completed the integrated course may register for a M.Sc (Dietetics) degree.
Since 1993, a B.Sc. degree with Nutrition and Physiology/Biochemistry as majors, a B.Sc. course with Nutrition as a two year major and Physiology or Biochemistry as the other major have been approved by the Department of Education and implemented by the Potchefstroom University.
During 1998 further changes were approved and Human Movement Science is now another possible major (B.Sc. with Nutrition and Human Movement Science/Physiology/Biochemistry). Possible postgraduate courses are an Hons., M.Sc. and Ph.D in Nutrition
