The North-West University is an accredited multi-purpose Higher Education provider with SAQA. The HEQC is the ETQA of this sector. As part of the quality assurance process of the HEQC, the NWU also has an agreed-upon quality assurance process in place for formal qualifications and short courses. Part of this is approval of short courses by the Institutional Committee for Academic Standards (ICAS).

Following regulations in the Institutional Policy for Short Courses, all short courses are divided into Credit-bearing and Non credit-bearing short courses.
