3. Dr Cecila du Toit (University of Pretoria): The English classroom and South African children’s literature
(No ambition, failure inevitable / Some underprivileged children can escape, survive, succeed!)

The phenomenon of children living on the street has become a common yet tragic reality of city life just about anywhere in the world. UNICEF recently declared that there are approximately 25 million street children in Asia and more than 10 million in Africa.  With the growth of the AIDS pandemic in South Africa, even more children will be forced on to the streets in the wake of the death of their primary caregivers, with a steady increase in social problems such as crime, violence, drug abuse, prostitution, teenage pregnancy, stds and child exploitation. Many South African children and youth novels deal with this crisis and related topics, each in its inimitable way. Whereas some books attempt to offer solutions (albeit simplistically), others strive to give a realistic portrayal of the problematics. In this workshop, some novels by South African authors are examined in an attempt to develop categories of approaches to the phenomenon, inter alia by applying theories on resilience as opposed to failure and total collapse. Although it would be presumptuous to offer solutions, our combined efforts in the workshop may go some way towards developing strategies to use these books also as class readers to address painful issues and offer a glimmer of hope to teachers who may actually have such children in their classes, if only for a short and therefore crucial time in their lives, and to others who know that the health of a whole society is reflected in the care it offers to its young.

5. Dr Estelle Kruger (Department of Curriculum Studies, Faculty of Education, Stellenbosch): Die gebruik van tradisionele literatuur om kreatiewe skryf te fasiliteer in Afrikaans/ The use of traditional literature to facilitate creative writing in the teaching of Afrikaans

Hierdie werksesssie berus op die resultate van ’n onderrigprogram met die gebruik van tradisionele literatuur in die onderrig van Afrikaans aan onderwysstudente aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch wat Afrikaans as hoofvak gekies het om in die IntermediÍre- en Seniorfases binne uitkomsgebaseerde onderwys te onderrig. Die aanbieder sal deur middel van verskillende voorbeelde aantoon hoe die gebruik van tradisionele literatuur die proses van kreatiewe skryf kan fasiliteer. Verskeie aspekte van kreatiwiteit sal uitgelig word as onderliggende faktore om verbeelding te stimuleer en kritiese geletterdheid te ontwikkel in die pre-skryffase.

The use of traditional literature to facilitate creative writing in the teaching of Afrikaans
This workshop is based on the results of a teaching programme in which traditional literature is used by education students at Stellenbosch University who have chosen Afrikaans as their major teaching subject in the Intermediary and Senior phases in the context of outcomes based education. The presenter will show different ways in which traditional literature can be used to facilitate the process of creative writing. Several aspects of creativity will receive attention in the workshop to focus on the stimulation of imagination and the development of critical literacy in the pre-writing phase.

6. Prof Maria Nikolajeva:
Mission Impossible? Writing a Scholarly Book on Children’s Literature
The workshop will explore several core issues essential for a successful writing and publishing of a book of criticism in children’s literature. These issues include: rationale and structure; reviewing previous research and creating an ample theoretical basis; identifying your potential audience and adapting the level of your argument to your presumed readers; choosing adequate material and analytical tools for your argument; and complying with the formal scholarly requirements and the demands of the publisher. The workshop will offer general discussions and some basic hands-on training. It will also suggest a few publishers interested in children’s literature research.
