Curriculum:  L608P: History:
• History:  Method and Theory (GESK611)
• History:  Historiography (GESK612)
• History:  South African History:  A selected theme (GESK623)
• History:  African History:  A selected theme (GESK624)
• History:  World History:  A selected theme (GESK625)
• Capita selecta (GESK626)
• History:  Research project (GESK627)

Directives for compiling the curriculum:
i)  A student must complete FIVE course units.  GESK611 and GESK612 are compulsory.
ii)   The choice of course units must be made in consultation with the subject chairperson.
iii)   The content of the Capita selecta module must be decided upon in consultation with the chairperson of the History subject group.

Master of Arts in History

The following are specific admission requirements of the programme and curriculum:  BAHons in History or an equivalent qualification.

Curriculum outcomes:
The student should be able to undertake research at an advanced level on aspects of History and be able to report on the research findings scientifically.  It will also provide the student with the preparation necessary for further advanced studies.

Articulation:
After successful completion of the curriculum, students may be admitted to a doctoral degree in History.

Doctorate in History

The following are specific admission requirements of the programme and curriculum: Apart from the requirements stipulated in General Rule A.14.1, a candidate must have a Master’s degree in History or an equivalent qualification.

Curriculum outcomes:
The student should be able to undertake advanced research, be able to report on the research findings scientifically at the highest level, and be able to make an original contribution to the science of the discipline.  With the knowledge acquired through this curriculum, the candidate should also be better equipped to occupy his/her professional position with confidence and to gain advanced insight into complex issues in society.
