Gerhard specialices in Namibian history, South African military history and land issues in the North West Province (South Africa). He has written one book, 2 chapters in books and 20 (twenty) articles in accredited magazines, and various articles in popular magazines, research articles and has critiqued various books from an historical perspective. He has also produced more than 14 (fourteen) congress papers.

Kobus completed research projects on South African political history during the reign of B. J. Vorster (1966 – 1978), the history of Afrikaner masculinities, rural development in the Lehurutshe area, a cultural heritage plan for the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site, and the resistance of the Bahurutshe of Lekubu (Braklaagte) to forced removal. Currently he focuses on aspects of environmental history, particularly the evolution of the concept of sustainable development and the relationship between cultural heritage management and environmental management. He has published many articles in academic journals, books and chapters in books. He has read papers at conferences in many countries. He serves on the editorial boards of academic journals and is involved in the supervision and examination of postgraduate students. He has taught at South African and Korean universities.
