Welcome to Sociology!

Here at the PUK the intention of the lecturers is to develop Sociology in a subject that students would like to study. Students will experience it as a subject that presents to them vanguard knowledge and skills that will equip them to contribute meaningfully to a fast changing world, especially in South Africa. Sociology will offer students knowledge as well as analytical and research skills that will make them in demand in the labour force or put them in the position to work independently.

What is Sociology?

Broadly speaking Sociology is the study of society and the interaction of people.

More specifically Sociology is the study in a scientific way of:

  • the spectrum of human interaction; from harmonic (order) to conflict relationships (disorder)
  • the nature of human relations; from the most informal to the formal and organisational relationships
  • all social structures, institutions, processes and aspects of society, for example the family, politics, economy, religion, media, health care, sport, gender, identity, etc.,
  • social problems; socio-economic inequality, exploitation, crime, poverty, development problems, war, conflict and refugees, HIV/AIDS, etc.

Why choose Sociology?

Irrespective of what you study, Sociology will develop your skills so that you can analyse, describe and explain human relationships and the functioning of society.

Sociology is indispensable for students who are interested in the following careers:

  • Social researchers and analysts
  • Project managers, analysts and evaluators
  • Labour relation negotiators
  • Planners and community developers
  • Managers
  • Impact study researchers
  • Communication specialists
