SHORT CV - Huib van Hamburg 

 Huib van Hamburg was born in 1946 in the Netherlands. He matriculated in 1963 from Oos Moot Secondary School in Pretoria, obtained his B.Sc. (Agric) in 1969, HED (Post-grad) in 1972, M.Sc. (Agric) in 1974 and the D.Sc. degree in 1977, all at the University of Pretoria.

From 1968 to 1987 he was employed at the Department of Agriculture by the Plant Protection Research Intstitute as a Professional Officer and Chief and later as Senior Agricultural Researcher. During this time he headed the unit involved with the biological control of insect pests. From 1981 to 1982 he worked at the Imperial College in Silwood Park in Great Britain, focusing mailnly on population dynamics.

He commenced his academic career at the PU for CHE where he held the following positions: Senior Lecturer (1988 - 1989), Associate Professor (1990 - 1996) and full Professor in Ecology and Plant Parasitology from 1997 onwards. In 1994 he was appointed as Head of the Department of Life Sciences at UNISA. As of January 1999, he was appointed as Director of the School for Environmental Sciences and Development at the PU for CHE.

His research activities focus primarily on the biological control of insect pests and rehabilitation ecology. He was assistant editor for the Journal of eht Entomological Society of Southern Africa, as well as treasurer and board member of the Entomological Society and the Zoological Society of South Africa.
