SHORT CV - Pieter D. Theron
Pieter Daniel Theron was born on April 20 th , 1945, at Britstown, Northern Cape Province. He matriculated in 1962 at the Theron High School, Britstown, and thereafter obtained the degrees BSc (1965), Hons. BSc (1966), MSc (distinction) (1968) and DSc (1972) in zoology, all from the Potchefstroomse Universiteit vir Christelike Hoër Onderwys.
He spent his full academic career at the PU vir CHO, where he consecutively held the following positions: Research Assistant (1966-1969), Research Associate (1970-1977), Senior Research Associate (1978-1985), Senior Lecturer (1986-1987) and Associate Professor since 1988. He is presently acting as chairperson of the Zoology subject group in the School of Environmental Sciences and Development.
He is an experienced lecturer who taught on a wide spectrum of sub-disciplines in Zoology to students on all levels.
His research activities deals mainly with the biodiversity and systematics of soil mesofauna with special emphasis on soil mites. He has forty research papers and thirty five contributions to national and international academic meetings to his credit.
He is registered (Pr. Sci. Nat. 401149/83) with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions.

RESEARCH INTERESTS - Pieter D. Theron
In terms of research, his focus is mainly on the taxonomy and ecology of soil-living mesofauna, especially the Acari and he has published more than forty research papers in peer-reviewed journals. His conference participations include 36 presentations and 26 poster presentations at scientific meetings. He is one of the founders and executive members of the journal African Plant Protection . He has already served in several capacities on the management of professional societies and was one of the founding members and first chair person (1998-2004), of the African Acarology Association . He has been invited as research professor to the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France on four occasions, namely 1995, 1996, 1999 and 2001. He is currently involved in a number of projects, both as leader/coordinator, or as collaborator with local and international research groups. He has been evaluated by the NRF as C 2 -researcher.
