Potchefstroom

The City

Potchefstroom_The_City

Potchefstroom is situated in the north of South Africa, about 120 km west south-west of Johannesburg, in the North West Province. The city was founded by the Voortrekkers in 1838.
Today, Potchefstroom is a modern city with a population of about 130,000 citizens. It is an academic city hosting the North-West University and more than 30 schools and diverse educational institutions.
The Dome Bergland Nature Park or the Boskop Dame Nature Reserve are only two places in town where you can relaxe. The MooiRivier Mall was built in 2008 and is a perfect place for shopping or enjoying a cup of Rooibos tea in the sun.

The University

Potchefstroom_The_University

The North-West University is a unitary, multi-campus institution with campuses spread across two provinces, with a single set of policies, systems and standards.  The four campuses i.e. Mafikeng, Mankwe, Potchefstroom and Vanderbijl Park function as business units with specific programmes and the institution follows a decentralised management system.
The North-West University is unique as it celebrates our country's diversity and underwrites our country's credo, "Many people make one".  The university is developing a unique institutional culture and ethos, with room for variety in campus cultures and ethos, based on the unity and value system of the university.  A wide range of academic programmes with regional and national relevance is being offered at our campuses.
The university is driven by the values contained in the Constitution, especially human dignity, equity and freedom. It promotes tolerance and respect for all perspectives and belief systems to ensure a suitable environment for education, learning, research and community service.

The Region

Potchefstroom_The_Region

Potchefstroom is a perfect starting point for visiting the country and its neighbouring states as Namibia, Botswana or Mozambique.
Johannesburg, Pretoria or Rustenburg can be reached by car within two hours. Furthermore, the beautiful seaside cities Durban, Port Elizabeth or Cape Town are well worth a visit.
You can also find the
Pilanesberg Game Reserve in the north of Potchefstroom. This park is the home for lots of African mammals, reptiles or plants. As a matter of course you can find the South African "Big 5" at Pilanesberg, too.
