PUKfm’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) program was brought into existence in 2009. PUKfm’s main objective is to serve as a source of entertainment and pleasure for the students and community of Porchefstroom. In the light of this, it is also important for us to give something back to the community, by supporting those who are less privileged than ourselves. It is vital for PUKfm to live by its motto of “More than just radio”. We want to climb out of our glass box and take a hands-on approach with the community. All the funds that PUKfm generates are redirected to Katlego. Katlego (meaning luck) is a registered non-governmental school for children between the ages of 0 and 5. The school is located in Ikageng, just outside of Potchefstroom. 46 Children go to school in a garage of 3m X 5m. The school has three ladies that act as teachers (only two have received formal training). Their meals consist of cereal, bread, soya en sometimes a bit of vegetables. Space is the biggest problem, according to the principal, Anna Mathinye.
Anna Mathinye has a huge passion for what she does, but the school’s limited resources make it difficult to provide the children a perfect education. Anna’s biggest priority is to merely feed these 24 children everyday - something that the school’s limited funds make nearly impossible.
In an attempt to help Katlego, PUKfm decided to organise the following projects:
P3: In cooperation with Pick ‘n Pay in Van der Hoffpark, Café Presso and the service centre for the elderly, PUKfm baked 83 dozen pancakes on 25 April 2009. The funds that were generated here went to Katlego and were used to buy a carpet to serve as some form of protection form the cold winter months. A donation was received from S.E.A. Engineering in Potchefstroom and made a huge difference!
Cooperation with Pick'nPay: At this stage, PUKfm has a service-for-service arrangement with PicknPay (van der Hoffpark, Potchefstroom). This food is given to Katlego each second month.

CANSA-Relay for Life:
On Saturday, 14 March, the management and certain members of the PUKfm committee took part in the Relay for life that was hosted by the international CANSA organisation. The purpose was to go without sleep, seeing how cancer never sleeps.
Canned-food day:
Canned-food day is an annual occurrence under hostel student’s SJGD (Student Community service) projects. With the help of Marketing and communications’ (BEK) staff, PUKfm managed to gather nearly 300 cans of food. These cans were given to Katlego.
Community Cuddle:
During the time between 28 April and 11 May, High school pupils from Gimmies and Volkies were challenged to gather as many articles of clothing as possible. The clothing was sorted by the PUKfm committee on 30 May and then handed out to underprivileged community members. Each school assigned 3 pupils to take over PUKfm’s “Skolie show” that will be aired once a week, from 12 July 2009. |
